Differences between Formula 1 and Indy

Differences between Formula 1 and Indy

This is one of the most frequently asked questions and the subject of much debate. In simple terms, Indy cars tend to be bigger, faster and more durable, however Formula 1 cars are more agile and can accelerate and brake faster. As to which is better and which would win a head to head race, well you can say that Formula 1 cars are better under the Formula 1 regulations at circuits and Indy cars are better under Indy regulations at Indy specific circuits.

Formula 1 in short is the fastest and the most elite, expensive and popular series. Teams are generally well funded, and are staffed with what is typically considered cream of the crop talent no matter their job within the team. A $500 million yearly budget is not unheard of.

Now going back to the differences, a Formula 1 car tends to be slower on the straights due to smaller engines, however quicker around corners. The Formula 1 engines do produce less horsepower, however the power comes on quicker because a Formula 1 cars are lighter and more responsive, reacting faster to the driver's input and braking.

Track Differences - Indy tracks can be ovals as well as road and street courses, however not the case with Formula 1 tracks. This, along with the use of the safety car, is the most significant difference between the two series. Whilst there are many technical differences between the two types of vehicles, there is not much of an impact from the spectator’s point of view.

Formula 1 fans state that the uniform oval tracks with only left turns, produce a sterile racing environment which allows no exciting passing. Furthermore, most accidents actually result in the safety car being required, closing up the field. Formula 1 fans do also argue that this produces an artificial racing environment reducing the race to a series of short sprints which are merely used to establish the grid order for the final sprint to the finish.

On the other hand Indy fans do argue that because of the wide difference in performance levels, and the fact that safety cars are rarely used, there is very little close racing or competitive passing in Formula 1 and of course as a spectator you cannot see the entire circuit at an Formula 1 race.

Brakes – Formula 1 cars use carbon fibre brakes which are lighter and more durable than the steel brakes used by Indy cars. (Indy cars are allowed to use carbon brakes on the 2.5 mile super-speedways at Indianapolis and Michigan. Steel brakes are mandatory at all the other circuits).

Weight – Formula 1 cars can weight as little as 585 kg (1,287 lbs). Indy cars however are heavier, with a minimum weight of 1,550 lbs (704.5 kg).

Ground effect – In general terms it is said that ground effect cars are no longer allowed in Formula 1 but this is not exactly accurate. All cars generate ground effects and you cannot ban it, only try to design the rules to limit the down force that can be obtained from it. In Formula 1 this is achieved by requiring flat bottoms between the wheels (now with 50mm step). Indy cars however still permit shaped ground effect tunnels, but with strictly controlled dimensions and at a minimum height above the bottom of the chassis.

Turbo Engines – Turbo engines are banned in Formula 1, however still still allowed in Indy, although with much lower boost pressure than was used by F1 cars in the 1980's.

Semi-automatic gearboxes – They are allowed in Formula 1, however not in Indy.

Nationality – The Indy championship is basically a domestic US series as far as teams, venues and drivers are concerned. However, races do run in 3 other countries outside of the US (Brazil, Surfers Paradise - Australia, Toronto and Vancouver - Canada) and an increasing number of foreign drivers. Formula 1 is truly an international sport with teams, engines, venues and drivers coming from all over the world.

And according to Jacques Villeneuve (who moved from Indy cars to Formula 1 cars) he stated that a Formula 1 car is slower on the straights but much quicker in the corners. The engine has less horsepower but the power comes on quicker and because a Formula One car is lighter and more responsive.

Because of the extra weight an Indy car, it is a bit more physical to drive, it slides more easily and it's harder work to hold it. A Formula One car is however more twitchy and when it slides you have to react faster to catch it. It has higher limits found this to be really enjoyable.

In Formula 1, teams must construct their own chassis and generally utilize proprietary electronics systems and software. Some teams provide both their own engine along with their chassis such as Toyota and Ferrari.

Formula 1 teams can lease an engine supply from outside manufacturers.

In Formula 1, ribbed tires are used since 1998. Tire rules do actually change year to year as there used to be a tire war between manufacturers (in the past) and more recently all tires are supplied by one manufacturer. Ribbed tires were introduced to slow the cars in high speed corners, resulting in chassis being narrowed.

Typically, an engine and aerodynamics are evolved over the race season. The car is developed over the year and becomes faster and more reliable.

The scope, level, and pace of development in Formula 1 outdoes Indy car racing. Formula 1 is said by many to be the most stressful, most expensive, most competitive sport of all sporting disciplines. F1 braking and cornering forces are tremendous, sometimes as high as 5g's

As you can see, there are distinctive technological differences between Formula 1 and Indy, however for us the spectators, it makes no major difference as we will continue to love motorsports and support our team or driver. Both sports will bring excitement to us fanatics and will continue to support our brand as the sport evolves!
